Help, Kālāma Sutta! Help!
Even more than when this was written, with social media and the like, we live in a confused mix of bombardment from external opinions and insulation within our preferred echo chambers. This also occurs within the vastness of Buddhist teachings, which are not always free of sectarianism and dogmatism. How do we find our way through these minefields?
We are fortunate that the early record of the Buddha’s teaching offers guidance regarding this dilemma. In this article, Ajahn Buddhadāsa highlights the freedom and responsibility of examining the important questions of our lives for ourselves. This doesn’t mean shutting out wise voices and clinging only to our own. Nor does it mean making of Buddhism whatever we wish. The Kālāma Sutta helps find the middle way.
