8812 – [2 of 7] Independence in Studying Buddhism

Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu continues by describing the importance of independence in our study of Buddhism. He explains that the approach of Buddhism is essentially a spiritual science because we must study and learn Buddhism through our own spiritual experience, and he offers advice on how to do this. He emphasizes the importance of direct realization – to experience objects of study with our own heart. He warns us of obstacles in our studies and how to avoid them. He introduces the words attammayatā (the highest level of knowledge), suññatā (voidness or emptiness), and nibbāna (when the mind is totally free).

This Dhamma teaching was offered by Tan Ajahn on 2nd December 1988.
